Ian Jones (BFA08) and Anisa Phillips (BFA09) have been selected as two of the five award winners for the BFA Now International Printmaking Competition.

In addition to receiving $500 cash awards, the two Sam Fox School Printmaking/Drawing majors will have their work shown during a weeklong exhibition in Los Angeles this fall.

"I call my process 'printcrafting' since I combine printmaking's silkscreen technique with the traditional crafting techniques of sewing, stuffing and embellishing," Phillips said. Her aim is to create "touchable creations that are meant to interact with and engage people."

There were 83 entries to the competition, which was open to any undergraduate student enrolled in a program of study in 2008 or 2009. Submissions came from students in North America, South America, the Middle East, and Europe. All entries were reviewed and scored by a group of five jurors, which included Joan Hall, Kenneth E. Hudson Professor of Art and director of Island Press at Washington University in St. Louis.

The other three winners for the printmaking competition were:
Eli Aharoni, Minshar School of Art (Tel Aviv, Israel)
Chul Beom Park, Corcoran College of Art + Design (Washington, D.C.)
Breanne Rupp, Flagler College (St. Augustine, Florida)

In its inaugural year, BFA Now is an international arts organization that sponsors events for undergraduate students enrolled in fine arts programs in North America, Europe, and Asia. This year the program hosted two international competitions: printmaking and painting. Next year, the media focus for the competitions will change to multimedia and photography.
