The Steedman Fellowship Governing Committee is pleased to announce Sheng Yan, MArch18, is the recipient of the 2017 Student Steedman Summer Travel Research Fellowship.
Awarded annually to a Washington University architecture student, the $5,000 fellowship supports the investigation of an architectural topic of the student's choosing. Recipients are selected by the committee on the basis of the student's proposed study outline, portfolio of work, and academic achievement. The committee noted that Yan’s proposal stood out for its relevance, creativity, and ambition.
Yan received the award for his proposed research on three former transcontinental “fuel-stop” airports: Gander International Airport in Newfoundland, Canada; Shannon Airport in Ireland; and Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in Alaska. He will visit, survey, and document each site to examine the potential of airports as prototypes for adaptive reuse in “outpost” population areas.
