World Market Exhibition

August 28, 2017 - September 28, 2017
Weitman Gallery, Lower Level, Steinberg Hall

World Market features an ongoing photo series by Frankie Holt, BFA90. Through the lens of traditional street photography, Holt uses the camera to raise questions about the global consumer culture. Her photo-essays of street markets and malls in Singapore, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and the United States reveal enormous amounts of identical product. It is on the street where she finds people lost in a sea of merchandise and disappearing into malls created to glorify goods, not people. Her work is not about the single image, but rather the investigation of contemporary culture by gathering many images from diverse settings to tell a story that cannot be told with words.

Born in Virginia, Holt is an art director, artist, and photographer now based in Los Angeles. She earned her BFA in photography from Washington University in 1990 and her MFA in sculpture from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1996. She is currently working on a long-term photo documentary project about the global consumer culture and the emerging middle-class in developing countries.
